On Saturday, the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa reported that a booster station had fallen victim to a cyberattack orchestrated by an Iranian-backed group. Matthew Mottes, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, confirmed to KDKA-TV that the cyber group, identified as Cyber Av3ngers, gained control of the station, triggering an alarm immediately upon the hack.

The affected station, situated on the outskirts of town, oversees pressure regulation for Raccoon and Potter Townships. Mottes emphasized that, as of now, there is no identified threat to the drinking water or water supply.

The targeted machine operates on a system called Unitronics, which Mottes noted contains software or components with Israeli ownership.

Prompt action was taken to disable the compromised system, and on Saturday, members of the Pennsylvania State Police were summoned to the booster station to initiate a criminal investigation.

In response to the incident, Congressman Chris Deluzio released a statement on Sunday, indicating that he is actively monitoring the situation.

Notably, Cyber Av3ngers has claimed responsibility for various global attacks, including targeting 10 water treatment stations in Israel as of October 30, 2023, as per information on their X page.
