Google is distributing an additional 100,000 units of its Titan Security Keys, a cybersecurity hardware, to enhance the protection of individuals working in high-risk industries. The Titan Security Keys serve as a “second factor” following password entry and can store passkeys for various accounts, including those beyond Google, such as Microsoft. These keys utilize FIDO2 technology, a web security standard for authentication.

Users can employ the Titan Security Keys to store passkeys for accounts beyond Google, using authentication methods like fingerprint recognition, face scans, or screen lock PINs. Google introduced the product at the Aspen Cyber Summit in New York City, announcing plans to distribute 100,000 keys throughout 2024 at no cost. The initiative specifically targets individuals involved in government roles worldwide, especially those engaged in election administration.

This distribution effort aligns with Google’s Advanced Protection Program (APP), designed to safeguard high-risk users like activists and journalists from online attacks. In 2023, Google already distributed the same number of keys. The company is collaborating with non-profits, including Access Now, Defending Digital Campaigns, Freedom House, the International Foundation of Electoral Systems, Internews, and PUBLIC.

Defending Digital Campaigns, an organization assisting political campaigns and parties in online protection, emphasized the significance of FIDO2 security keys for high-risk political campaign users. The organization has scheduled sessions with political parties to discuss security measures for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Google’s initiative addresses persistent concerns about password theft, reflecting the company’s perspective that eliminating passwords is the most effective way to mitigate risks. The Titan Security Key, first released in 2018, utilizes FIDO2 credentials and cryptography, providing a simpler and more secure means of accessing accounts without relying on passwords.

Carlos Guerra, Internews’ Technical Advisor on Digital Security Programs, emphasized that adopting two-factor authentication, particularly physical security keys using FIDO 2 technology, is crucial for enhancing online account security. He noted that large-scale distribution programs like Google’s play a vital role in providing secure tools to individuals facing heightened risks in various professions.
