The Government of Bermuda, a British overseas territory, has attributed a cyberattack that has disrupted the IT systems of all its departments since Thursday to hackers based in Russia.

The Bermuda Government alerted the public about the ongoing interruption of internet, email, and phone services, affecting all departments. The Department of Information and Digital Technology (IDT) is working diligently to restore these services.

During a statement, Premier David Burt disclosed that the incident not only impacted the Bermuda Government but also affected other regional governments. Initial indications point to the attack originating from an external source, most likely Russia. Collaboration with agencies is underway to identify any specific challenges and restore services promptly.

Reports from local media suggest that other Caribbean jurisdictions have also experienced similar disruptions.

The Bermuda Government recently revealed that additional service disruptions are expected throughout the day due to ongoing network interruption issues.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, with the IDT teams actively working to restore services and regain access to the affected systems.

Although efforts are being made to facilitate payroll and vendor payments, delays are anticipated. Cash and check payments are currently being accepted by cashiers.

Government House has been informed about the situation and is working cooperatively with the Government to address the issue.

The Bermuda Government plans to hold a press briefing later today to provide further updates on the investigation’s progress and findings.
